As daunting as the elective title may seem, I am really looking forward to exploring this subject with the middle schoolers this quarter.
This class will be working their way through "Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory", which starts with the very basic building blocks of music theory and works it's way up. By the end of this quarter, the goal is to have students comfortable with not only reading music, but writing their own.
Along with learning the rules that go with writing music, students will also discover a "Composer of the Week". To be able to grow as composers themselves, they will have the opportunity to sample works of the greats who came before them.
